Paroxetine is a selective serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) reuptake
inhibitor (SSRI) used in the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, and panic disorder. It is a phenylpiperidine derivative which is not
related to the tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants chemically. The
hydrochloride salt of it is administered orally. Chemically, it is
(-)-trans-4R-(4'-fluorophenyl)-3S-[(3',4'-methylenedioxyphenoxy) methyl]
piperidine hydrochloride hemihydrate. Paroxetine hydrochloride is a white to
off-white powder; melting point of 118 - 125 C; soluble in waer (5.4 mg/ml).
